Mirella Marini

Hi, my name is Mirella Marini and I’m an historical consultant. You can find out more about that on this page.

I blog about history, my cultural interests, my travels, and occasionally just about anything else that comes in my head. You can for instance find tips on how to visit museums with children or what I do with my bucket list.

“Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don’t”

Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young
Mary Schmich, Chicago Tribune, 1997, June 1

Why ‘Wear Sunscreen’ as the title for my website? Because I heartily agree with the message of the famous text of Mary Schmich, later put to music by Baz Luhrmann:

At 40, I came to the realization that I’m too old to not be doing what I like in life.

Which is what exactly?

Well, I’m an historian and I specialise in the history of 17th century noble women in the Low Countries. I’m most happy when I can write and talk about family intrigues, court gossip or female power strategies.  All that juiciness should at some point result in a PhD. My historical guilty pleasure is Tudor history. I would love to write something like ‘The ultimate guide to Elizabeth I’s wardrobe’ or ‘Henry VIII’s view on love: a children’s history book’. Or maybe not.

I love to travel with my husband and daughter, who took her first flight with us when she was just 7 weeks old. Since then, we haven’t stopped dragging her around the world with us. Travelling is a way of keeping me sane! Which is why you will probably read about my summer holidays in midwinter 😉 There is no better escape from the cold and the dark, than reliving your travels.

This also explains why “Travelling through time” is the tagline for my consultancy business! There is no better way to travel in your head, then taking a trip down history lane!

In 2016, I founded the Belgian Academy of Culture and History, which provides historical education, consultancy and events.  If you’re looking for more information about the history lessons and events we offer, please visit www.cultureandhistory.org.

On this website you can also find out more about how I can help you with historical consultancy. I work in Dutch, English and French.

Don’t just drop by, leave a comment! Or if you’d like to get in touch, just fill in the form and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
